US ground forces spokesman says none of nine soldiers' injuries life-threatening amid escalating unrest.

BAGHDAD - Nine more US soldiers were wounded in Iraq in the previous 24 hours but none of their injuries was serious or life-threatening, a US ground forces spokesman said on Wednesday.

The toll did not include the two killed and nine wounded in the flashpoint city of Fallujah west of Baghdad, where US troops were ambushed by attackers early Tuesday, Captain David Connolly said.

"There are still elements of the former regime who are trying to disrupt our efforts to rebuild Iraq, whether paramilitary or former members of the Baath party" of Saddam Hussein, he said (...)

He gave no further details but said there had also been a rocket-propelled grenade attack Tuesday night on an Iraqi police station which caused no injuries.

Middle East Online on Tuesday received a letter attributed to Saddam which called for resistance against US and British forces and a separate statement claiming the Fallujah attack.

The statement from the "General Command of the Iraqi Armed, Resistance and Liberation Forces" said the ambush had been carried out by "special forces, al-Faruk Brigades and members of the Baath Party."
